At NTCOGSO, we understand that suspensions can be difficult — not only for students, but also for families, teachers and schools. Our aim is to support positive communication and ensure everyone involved understands the process and the supports available.
This page provides an overview of the current Northern Territory Department of Education suspension guidelines (effective January 2025), along with how NTCOGSO can assist.
What is a suspension?
A suspension is when a student is temporarily removed from school due to serious behaviour concerns. Under the Department of Education’s guidelines, suspension is intended to be used only when necessary, and always alongside efforts to support student wellbeing and engagement.
Key points from the 2025 guidelines
Purpose: To ensure a safe and respectful learning environment for all students and staff.
Process: Before suspension, principals must consider the student’s individual circumstances, including any disability, trauma history, or support needs. Other strategies must be explored first.
Procedural fairness: The student — and if appropriate, their parent or carer — must be given the chance to respond before a suspension begins.
Length: Suspensions are time-limited. Any extension requires careful consideration and approval.
Support: Students who are suspended more than once must have a support plan developed, aimed at helping them re-engage positively with school.
Continuity of learning: Schools are expected to support ongoing learning for students while they are suspended, to help minimise disruption to their education.
Communication: Schools must provide written notice to parents or carers, explaining the reason for the suspension, how long it will last, and any next steps.
